1. How do you left align analog tags? Answer: Use a non proportional font e.g. Courier New and use an applicable formatting string e.g. %5.2f. For more information, search for this Adroit Help topic: Text Formatting Examples 2. Why am I unable to silence my alarms using the Silence menu item in the Options menu of the User Interface or its Ctrl-Q hot-key combination? Answer: The Silence menu item (Ctrl-Q) is only able to silence remote User Interface alarms, which are configured by using the Alarm Indication page of the User Interface Preferences. This menu option has no effect upon the alarms that are configured in the Agent Server via the Configurator. To silence these alarms: 1.) Open the Configurator window. 2.) Select ‘Alarm’ from the Type list box. 3.) Edit all of the Alarm agents that are listed in the Agents list box, by default only the defaultAlarmAgent appears. 4.) In the Alarm agent’s edit dialog, use the ‘Select route number’ to select both route 0 and route 1 and any other routes numbers that appear and do the following: highlight the aBeeper.start in the Audio devices list and click the Delete button to remove it (also remove any other entries in this Audio devices list). 5.) Press the Ok button and while the Configurator dialog is selected press the Save toolbar button or File menu/Save item. 3. How can an Autocad drawing be imported into Adroit? Answer: This is NOT importable, however the drawing can be brought in as a background. Then you can draw normal adroit graphics elements over it, and finally remove the background. To bring the drawing in as a background: (1) Ensure that AutoCAD is the currently selected application, and that the complete drawing is shown in the screen. Then press Alt-Print Screen (2) Paste this screenshot into Microsoft's Paint program (3) Cut and copy only the image of the drawing and save it as a bitmap file (4) Insert this file into the Adroit mimic as a bitmap element, stretch it as needed. For more information, search for this Adroit Help topic: To add a Bitmap 4. How do you shade background colors? Answer: Draw the required picture element e.g. the elipse or the rectangle (Only closed shapes can have a background color). Then select the Properties of the picture element (by double left clicking the picture element) then in the list box next to 'Background color' select 'Shaded' and press the Edit… button to select the style of shading and the shading color.. For more information, search for this Adroit Help topic: Background Color 5. Why does the ‘Close picture’ Execute Command behavior on buttons not work? Answer: If the Windows Explorer has been configured to hide extensions of known file types AND you have WinZip installed then .MIM files are registerd as WinZip files and have their extensions hidden by the system before Adroit tries to close them. Hence, the solution is either to ensure that Windows Explorer is set up not to hide extensions of known file types or to configure Winzip not to be associated with ‘.MIM’ files. 6. The description in the event log appears as an ä in the description field - why? Answer: Check that the regional settings are set to English (United States) and not English (United Kingdom). For more information, search for this Adroit Help topic: To select international settings 7. How do you design an eventlog that is not displayed in the alarm list? Answer: It is important to remember that Events and Alarms are two different items. Events, form a permanent disk record. Alarms, represent the current values of the pre-programmed statuses. If alarms are routed to the event log, then they are also recorded to disk with the events. The alarm and event windows are just views, of the alarms and events and can be modified to suit one’s viewing preferences. 8. How do you set up a security setup for Adroit on Windows 2000 (Win 2K)? Answer: Follow the following procedure: Note: Ensure that all the users belong to the "Power User" security group instead of the default "User" group. Since the "Power User" group in Windows 2000 has the same access rights as the "User" group in Windows NT 4. For instance when running Adroit on Windows 2000 when only configured as a "User" and not a "Power User", you will able to start the User Interface but not be able to start the Agent Server or PSEXE.EXE (Adroit Setup). If the Agent Server is installed as a service, then the Agent Server will also start. 1. Ensure that accounts have been created for each Adroit user, either globally on the domain controller or locally on each computer. For detailed information on individual security parameters, consult the Windows 2000 Resource Kit. 2. Create the groups specific to your project 3. Ensure that each user is assigned to the relevant Group. 4. Select the Local Security Policy In Administrative Tools, locally on each machine, open the Local policies folder: a) Select the Audit Policy folder, double left click Audit account logon events, then check Success, to record successful log on attempts and / or Failure, to record all the unsuccessful log on attempts. Press OK, when finished. b) Select the User Rights Assignment folder, double left click Act as part of the operating system. Press Add… to add all the required Adroit users, to the Assigned To list box. Press OK, when finished. c) The logon option will immediately become available for use by the users of Adroit. 9. Windows 95 will not display mimcs with a bitmap that was created using NT4 Answer: The compression technique used to compress the bitmaps in NT4 is not supported in Windows 95, therefore when saving bitmaps from a graphics program use the 256-color uncompressed bitmap, option. Note: Adroit 5 has been designed to be used with NT-based Operating Systems 10. How do you set up a security setup for Adroit on NT? Answer: Follow the following procedure: 1. Ensure that accounts have been created for each Adroit user, either globally on the domain controller or locally on each computer. For full details on creating user accounts refer to the Microsoft Windows NT User Guide, User Manager. 2. Create the groups specific to your project 3. Ensure that each user is assigned to the relevant Group. 4. Select the User Manager In Administrative Tools, locally on each machine, open the Policies menu: a) Select the Audit menu item, then select Audit these events and next to the Logon and Logoff item, then check Success, to record successful log on attempts and / or Failure, to record all the unsuccessful log on attempts. Press OK, when finished. b) Select the User Rights menu item, check the Show Advanced User Rights checkbox, in the Rights list, select ‘Act as part of the operating system’. Press Add… to add all the required Adroit users, to the Grant to list box. Press OK, when finished. c) Logoff and logon to NT to make these security rights and the logon option available for use by the users of Adroit. 11. Why does the Adroit UI become slow and unresponsive when I log onto the UI using a different user from the currently logged on Windows user? Answer: If you have installed Microsoft’s “Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool” as available via “Windows Update”, and you experience this problem, then uninstall Microsoft’s “Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool”. 12. Why does my bitmap image appear distorted? Answer: This will occur if the “Draw bitmaps at original sizes” checkbox is cleared in the “Bitmap Properties” dialog. Since Adroit uses the world co-ordinate mode as opposed to pixel mode, in order to provide zooming and other graphic features. To resolve this problem for an existing Bitmap picture element: 1. Remove the existing Bitmap picture element from the mimic. 2. Add a new Bitmap picture element. 3. Double click this to display the “Bitmap Properties” dialog, ensure that the "Draw bitmaps at original sizes" checkbox is checked. 4. Add the required bitmap and close the dialog. 5. This will display the bitmap at the original size, if this is too big for your mimic then use the picture element handles to resize the bitmap as required. 6. Save the mimic. 13. Why does the description field of the event viewer windows in Adroit 6.0.1 display corrupted text? Answer: This occurrs when an existing Adroit 6.0.0 installation is UPDATED to Adroit 6.0.1 or one of its critical (sub) updates (1.1, 1.2 or 1.3). This can be fixed by EITHER installing the required hotfix OR installing any Adroit update from Adroit 6.0.2 onwards. 14. Why do I get an error message and am prevented from adding more output destinations to my alarm route output list? Answer: The problem/limitation is that the "Output" route value is stored in a string, which is only 80 chars in length. Therefore if the output destination names are too long, the following error message, will be displayed when another output is added: "The new item cannot be inserted into this list. The list cannot contain more than 80 characters". To work around this, rename the output destinations, for instance, notifier agents to more realistic names e.g. NOTIFIER_USER_1 should be more like USR1 etc. Note1: Even if the output destinations are simply named, such as: a,b,c etc . this means that only a maximum of 45 destinations can be specified. Note2: This problem is also experienced in a a distributed system, where remote routes are used, in this case, the maximum number of output destinations are negatively affected by using long computer names, which precede these output names. 15. How do I disable administrative rights in the Adroit User Interface? Answer: To prevent users with Windows Administrator privileges having unrestricted control and access in Adroit, add the following value and set this to 0: HKEY_LOCAL_computer\SOFTWARE\Adroit Technologies\Adroit\WorkSheet\Security (REG_)DWORD enableadminpowers = 0 Note: The default value of 1 will result in users with Windows Administrator privileges having unrestricted control in Adroit. 16. How can I configure the JPEG publishing to ONLY use a trigger when publishing Adroit documents to JPEG images? Answer: The JPEG publishing facility of the Adroit User Interface ALWAYS requires a publishing rate to be specified even when a trigger is used. Therefore in order to ONLY use a trigger to publish Adroit documents, configure the publishing rate to 2147483647 (the largest signed 32 bit integer) seconds which is 68 years. 17. How does the "Rounded corners" checkbox in the Rectangle properties, become available for rectangles that are drawn on a mimic? Answer: The scale lines checkbox under the General Tab of Picture Properties, needs to be checked, for that specific mimic. For more information, search for this Adroit Help topic: Rectangle Properties 18. How can we obtain the millisecond time unit in an exported trending data CSV file? Answer: When the time is exported by a trend, the milliseconds are NOT exported, since milliseconds are not supported by MS Excel or other programs that would try to convert the data into variant times. This is because Variant times do not support millisecond resolution. 19. How can a digital tag be used to open a mimic or any other User Interface document? Answer: Use an Execute command behavior, with the 'Open window' command, browse in the required User Interface document file name, specify the 'Tag' to be the trigger, browse in the required digital tag as a trigger and determine the triggering condition, either On, Off, or to toggle. For more information, search for this Adroit Help topic: To add Execute Command behavior to a picture element 20. Why does the shading not work? Answer: Check that the shading facility is not running out of colors, the screen card may need to be upgraded, if this is the case. 21. How can I print the alarm page? Answer: The only way to print the alarm page is to do a windows screen print i.e. press the ‘Print Screen’ key, this is because it is only meant as a display of currently active and/or currently unacknowledged alarms. To print historical alarms you would need to filter and print an event view window. 22. How do you connect over the network using Windows 95? Answer: When using Windows 95 and Windows 98 computers for UI nodes, it sometimes helps to have a mapped network driver connecting you to the server. This is due to the computer browsing mechanism and broadcasting or new computers joining the network differing between NT and non-NT workstations. Note: Adroit 5 has been designed to be used with NT-based Operating Systems. 23. How do you mirror a mimic? Answer: Copy the image, flip the copied image vertically and drag the left hand side, of the copied image, over to the right hand side and the copied image will be the mirror the original image. To ensure that the copy is the same size as the original, select both images and then select the Arrange menu and select the ‘Size…’ item and then depending on the relative size of the copied image select ‘Smallest’, if it is larger than the original or ‘Largest’, if the copy is smaller than the original. For more information, search for this Adroit Help topic: Flip Vertically 24. Every time I print a mimic the text comes out upside down on the printout, how can this be fixed? Answer: Since Adroit version 3.5 certain printers have printed the text of Mimics upside down, while printing the other graphical items correctly. If you are experiencing this problem then do the following: 1) Open your User Interface (select the Start menu, Programs, Adroit 6 and the 'Classic User Interface' item). 2) Open the Options menu and click on the Preferences... menu item. 3) Select the Advanced tab, in the 'Adroit Properties' dialog. 4) Enable the 'Flip printed text vertically' checkbox under the 'Mimic settings' group. 25. My Adroit menus have disappeared, how do I get them back? Answer: Press the hot-key Ctrl+M to display the Adroit menu in the user Interface or open the View menu and select the Menu item. 26. How do I to set up a remote UI? Answer: Open the Adroit Setup program and select the 'UI Connection' tab and then select the "Enable the UI to connect to any one of the following Agent Servers" option and enter the required machine name and the Agent Server and keep the default 'Automatic tracking' option selected so that this connection will not be able to be changed. For more information, search for this Adroit Help topic: UI Connection Configuration 27. When exiting the Agent configurator window i.e. clicking on the X in the top right corner and answering “NO” to the save changes dialog box, but the changes are saved anyway. Answer: The only way for this to happen is that the Agent Server was shut down and the “Save on Exit” option in the Adroit Setup / Agent Server / Advanced dialog is enabled. For more information, search for this Adroit Help topic: Advanced Configuration 28. How do I create a periodic notification (notifier) of alarms, from an agent, that are ONLY in an active state, so that if the alarm becomes inactive but unacknowledged I do not want a notification? Answer: Make a new alarm type for the required agent e.g. NOTE_HIHI etc When alarming this agent, associate this newly created NOTE_HIHI alarm type to a separate list, so as to avoid having a double entry in the standard list and clear the ACKNOWLEGE check box. Hence an alarm will be created in the new "hidden" list as acknowledged, so that when it becomes inactive, it will be removed from this alarm list and from the notifier. 29. How do I prevent routed events from old, non-current time-stamped values, being sent from Adroit? Answer: Background: Mimics show a "playback" of data when the Protocol driver fetches "historical" or old, non-current, data. But if the current value of the tag is fetched first, and then its historical value, then the mimics do not do a "fast-forward" since they ignore the "old" time stamped data. But the alarms and events are still generated for this historical data, and hence the routed SMS's, via the Notify agents etc. are also sent out, which is not desired. To prevent these routed events from occurring, you need to disable the alarm agent while the "history" update is occurring. For instance this can be done through the driver providing a "flag" to tell Adroit, that the data is "old", via an expression, which disables the alarm agent. 30. The menu in my User Interface has disappeared and I need to open a new file Answer: Use the Menu item in the View menu or press Ctrl-M. This will work for the current user if allowed by the UI security configuration otherwise you will need to call the Adroit configuration administrator. For more information, search for this Adroit Help topic: The View Menu 31. Why does my Event Viewer window continually indicate that it is “Busy…” retrieving events? Answer: PLEASE NOTE: A serious bug was introduced into the Adroit Classic UI in Adroit 6.0.1.2, which prevented Event Viewer windows from displaying events. In other words, when an Event Viewer window is opened in Adroit 6.0.1.2, it will indefinitely indicate that it is “Busy…” retrieving events. To fix this, please upgrade to Adroit 6.0.1.3 or later. 32. After attempting to unscan approximately 500 tags, an error message ‘transport error 1’ appears and the connection to the agent server is lost - why? Answer: You have attempted a transaction that may take a while and will exceed the built-in client/server connection timeout. Try not to scan/unscan tags while the device is started and also try to reduce the number of tags being worked on at the same time. When this happens simply close and reopen the configurator and check to see how much of the transaction did in fact succeed. 33. How do you shade an ellipse? Answer: Having drawn the elipse, select the Properties of the elipse (by double left clicking the elipse) then in the list box next to 34. How do I get a remote UI to disconnect from the Agent Server if there has not been any mouse or keyboard action for a certain amount of time? Answer: This can be configured by using the User Interface Preferences settings, by opening the Options menu, selecting ‘Preferences’ and opening the Connection tab. Under ‘UI connection timeout settings’ tick the ‘Enable’ checkbox and then specify the applicable timeout setting in the ‘Timeout in minutes’ edit box. Hence after the specified duration, if there has been no mouse or keyboard action the User Interface will close. 35. How do you insert a date to print historical trends? Answer: The date and time are part of the trend window, ensure that the panel between the lines and the legend is enlarged and the font size is reduced, so that the date fits in this area. For more information, search for this Adroit Help topic: Printing Trend Lines 36. Can changes be made to mimics in Version 4 and reloaded onto Version 3.5.1? Answer: No. The mimics will not run on Version 3 if changes have been made in Version 4. 37. I have a multi-monitor system with 2 displays, but after a power failure, the 2 UI's run on top of each other, why? Answer: The multi-monitor software used works in different ways, to force the positioning of windows, use one of the following two methods, which will bypass the monitor's own software placement logic. Option A: Use the workspaces command-line options (please see adroit help on this) 1. Make 2 copies of the Adroit shortcut on your desktop, change the command-line and add "/w:left" (no quotes) after the "adroit.exe" to the one, and add "/w:right" to the other. 2. Rename the shortcuts appropriately 3. Run one of them, position the window, and set up the workspace, as you want it, save the workspace. 4. Close the UI and run the shortcut again, if it does not appear in the desired fashion, use Option 'B'. For more information, search for this Adroit Help topic: To Specify a Workspace to Load by Default 5. Do step 3 for the other shortcut. 6. Move or copy the shortcuts to your "Start-up" program group. Log off and log on again to test. Option B: 1. Make 2 copies of the Adroit.exe program, re-name them "left.exe" and "right.exe", then create shortcuts to each. 2. Add the shortcuts to your start menu, and run each one, and position the window as you want it, in this case, the UI's will share a workspace, and the default mimics on the one will be the same as on the other. 3. Log off and log on to test if it works. If neither solution works, try changing the settings for the display that control the way that the windows are positioned. You will have to re-boot after changing a setting to ensure that it is correctly enforced. 38. How do you print the Event Log list? Answer: Select the Event window and press the Print toolbar button or open the File menu and select the 'Print…' menu item. For more information, search for this Adroit Help topic: Printing 39. A new user was created and when logging onto NT (or 2000) as the new user, the User Interface would not connect to a remote Agent Server Answer: Using "Network Neighbourhood", is this new user able to view shares on the remote PC where the Agent Server is running. If not, ask your system/network administrator to assign the new user the necessary rights to do so. For more information, search for this Adroit Help topic: Security Settings 40. How do I print out the Adroit database? Answer: All of the Adroit configuration data is held in an ASCII file with the extension '.WGP'. Either print out this file or export the individual agents, devices, scan list from the Configurator to their CSV files and print these separately. 41. Does Adroit have time-delayed alarms to suppress nuisance alarms, generated by noisy data e.g. for flow switches? Answer: 1. Edit the Alarm agent that is to be used, and create an alarm type called "onCountExceeded", set the checkmark for the "onCount". 2. Create a Counter agent, and scan the "startStop" slot from the "noisy" switch or bit (or @scan from another Digital agent), that you want to configure a time-delayed alarm for (an "on" duration in the Counter agent). 3. Scan the "inputvalue" slot from a SIMPLC address, for instance: DB12:DW0.0 and set the Period (in milliseconds) to be a divisor of the intended alarm interval. Ensure that the SIMPLC device is started. 4. In the Counter agent edit dialog, click "Alarms", and specify an on-count limit by dividing the divisor in step 3 by your desired "noise" period, divide by 2 (since SIMPLC toggles once each poll). This will be the on-count limit to type in here. 5. Alarm your alarm agent using the alarm type created in step 1. Hence this Counter agent will start counting up, the instant an alarm is active, and increase the count with every SIMPLC change. When the alarmed bit goes off, the Counter agent will be held in reset and will stop counting. 42. How do you get into the password setup? Answer: When running Non-NT systems, Adroit manages security for you, as 2 levels only, secured or not secured. When running on NT, where the operating system security is used, multiple security groups or levels can be set, these all get configured in the windows User Manager, under "Administrative Tools". "For Windows 95 and 98: Select 'Security' menu from Adroit and choose the 'Passwords' menu option. The passwords dialog box is displayed then enter and confirm the Administrator Override and the Operator Override passwords. For Windows NT and 2000: There is no password setup in Adroit, but to change the current password, press Ctrl-Alt-Delete and select the 'Change Password' button and complete the dialog that is displayed." For more information, search for this Adroit Help topic: The Security Menu 43. How do you edit a mimic? Answer: Use the toggle view option. For more information, search for this Adroit Help topic: Toggle View 44. I am using a multi-monitor display and want to size a mimic over more than one monitor, how do I do this? Answer: First, ensure that the multi-monitor software has been successfully installed and and the multi-monitor display configuration is fully operational. Then if a window is displayed only in one monitor, hold the mouse over the edge of the window so that it becomes a two-headed arrow, and click and drag it over into the second monitor. Maximizing a window will cause it to spread over all of the monitors. Note: Ensure that the Advanced UI settings (Options menu/Preferenced\Advanced tab) has the multi-monitor support correctly configured. 45. Why are there no agents visible in the configurator? Answer: Check that the correct WGP file has been configured in Adroit Setup. Confirm that this file was actually loaded in the Agent Server window or verify that there were no errors in loading this file by looking at the Agent server window messages. For more information, search for this Adroit Help topic: Loading Agents 46. How do you import/export a database? Answer: An Adroit database (WGP) can only to exported and imported by importing and exporting each individual agent type that is used in the database. Therefore some agents like alarming can be exported but cannot be reimported, press F1 for a table highlighing the exportablity and importability of different agent types. For more information, search for these Adroit Help topic: Overview of Configuration Options Available for each Agent; Exporting and Importing Agents 47. How to print text from Adroit to a parallel port (or CSV etc) by using a "dummy" alarm Answer: 1. Open Regedit, find the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Adroit Technologies\Adroit\\Workgroup\WG.INI Add a new DWORD value to it, called PrintClearedAlarms, ensure the spelling is correct. Leave the value as 0 (zero) This will prevent all the Eventoutput agents from printing the "cleared" alarm in addition to printing the "set" alarm. IMPORTANT: This is advanced information, if you use the Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system, use this Registry Editor at your own risk. Also do not implement this change unless you understand exactly how these will affect the operation of your Adroit installation, if you have any doubts, please contact the Adroit Support, before changing the registry. 2. Create an Eventoutput agent, edit it... click on "Format...". Only add the reported data field, and make the field width the MAX width that you need the output to be e.g. if printing a 12-character barcode, set this width to 12. (The agent will crop or add spaces to the end of the text up to this value, making the text fixed-width.) A carriage-return line-feed pair is also appended to the text either to trigger printing or start new line. 3. Click OK, then set the Size to 1, disregarding the former "full page" setting. For more on line-by-line printing, please search in the Adroit help for “Method for sending events to Printers”. Set the Printer Type, accordingly. 4. Click on the Activate "Yes" selection and click OK. Now edit your alarm Agent, Perhaps create a brand new alarm agent for this. 5. Select the alarm route you wish to use, preferably use route 2 or greater, (add routes if needed). Add the new Eventoutput agent from step 2 to the "output". Remember that the route you select now will always route to the printer for all alarms on all alarm agents. For this reason, maybe make the route number something like 10. 6. Now click on the Alarm Types tab, select the "string" agent type (or whatever agent type U will store the string in), and create a new alarm type using one of the private status bits. Search the Adroit help for “To add or edit an alarm type”. 7. Using one of the private or un-used status bits means the alarm we are going to use will not interfere with this tag's normal alarming operations, we are going to generate a "dummy" alarm. In the alarm type box/field, type in a name for our new alarm, maybe call it "print". Then click one of the unused status bits (the 1st one without a name will do) If you have used a string agent, this will be bit 16, the bits real name is "statusbit16". If this does not make sense yet, don't worry. 8. OK all of this, then in the Configurator, click on the string tag that will contain the text and click on the Alarm…” button. Select the alarm agent from step 4 and select the alarm type from the previous step, add this to the Current list on the left. Select the route number from step 5. Your EventOutput agent from step 2 will now appear in the list under "printers". Now to test that this has been correctly configured: 9. We will need to draw a small mimic, in the mimic, add an Operator Action "digital toggle" behavior, for the tag and browse in your string tag that we alarmed. 10. Select the tag, and type in the slot name that was used in step7 e.g. statusbit16. Put the mimic into operate mode. 11. Click on the element created in step 10 a few times to toggle the "alarm trigger" slot, and the text should be printed as required. How it works: By turning the private status bit on, we are generating an alarm in this way, (our own custom alarm) which gets routed to the Eventoutput agent. The Eventoutput agent is configured for line-by-line printing, so it sends the text out on the configured device/port immediately. Because we have set the registry up to not print cleared alarms, the Agent does not print the alarm again when we turn the alarm condition off. Application: The best possible application, is to use a Script agent to fill the string with the desired text to be printed, it must then do a Putslot into the private status bit "statusbit16" of the tag, to turn in on (1 / TRUE), and then off (0 / FALSE) again. 48. How do you combine 2 .WGP files on two machines? Answer: Export one of the Adroit databases (WGP) by using the File\Export command to export each individual agent type that is used in the database. Therefore some agents like alarming can be exported but cannot be re-imported. Press F1 for a table highlighting the exportability and importability of different agent types. Then Use the File\Load Agents command to load the agents into the other database and use the import buttons in the device agents to import the scanning and the import button in the recipe agents to import the recipes. For more information, search for these Adroit Help topic: Overview of Configuration Options Available for each Agent; Exporting and Importing Agents 49. How can I prevent a user from minimizing the Adroit UI? Answer: To prevent the Adroit application window from being minimized you need to remove its title bar, which has the effect of taking away the system menu. To do this select Preferences under the Options menu and select the Window tab and clear the ‘Display window title’ tick box. 50. Why do mimics in the background, lose color even though the PC has a 1MB video card? Answer: Adroit only works on 65535 or hi-color systems, when using 256-color display, the colors are limited to only using the system colors, and no shading and custom colors. We call this a palletized system, and windows keeps 256 placeholders for each color, if 2 colors occupy the same placeholder they come out in the same color regardless. 51. Why can’t I close an alarm window that has security on it? Answer: This is because the security configuration prevents you from closing any window with security, logon as the Administrator instead. 52. Is there any way to determine if communications have failed, to or from a driver, from a mimic? Answer: To determine if the communications are healthy via a slot in the device agent, draw the following on a mimic: 1. Draw a rectangle. 2. Attach the background color behaviour to it, using the "start" slot for the device agent you want to monitor. (Use the default colors red and green). This is the controlling button. 3. Attach an operator action behaviour to it, using the same "start" slot, making it "Digital toggle". 4. Draw 2 smaller rectangles, add background color behaviour to them using the "Healthy" and "commsFail" slots for this device agent respectively. 5. Put the mimic into operate mode now, and if the rectangle (from step 1) is not green, click on it, so that it changes. If it does not, you may have a license/HASP problem, run the agent server in demo mode. Note: For Adroit start-up, the commsfail status bit will always be on for a while until the communications actually begin to run, look at the “start” slot rectangle at this time. The healthy status bit also only comes on once every single scan-task has responded with valid data. Results: When the device is stopped, the Healthy rectangle goes (off) red, and the CommsFail rectangle goes on (green) When the device is started, the Healthy rectangle is on (green), the CommsFail rectangle is off (red) When there is a communication error, these 2 are the same as for when stopped above. Note1: These observable results are only true for polled (normal) drivers. Note2: Building on the above, you can now also build custom alarms, and even use these slots in expressions and Adroit scripts. 53. How do I replace the standard desktop (Desktop Explorer) with the Adroit User Interface? Answer: To configure an NT station to replace the standard desktop (Desktop Explorer) with the Adroit User Interface, follow this procedure: Before continuing you need to decide on the following issues: a.) Will you ever need to reverse this configuration? If so, have you configured the auto-logon feature with a user who has no administrative rights? If so, is this PC on a network with other NT stations that will allow me to configure this PC's registry remotely?. If so, no problem. If not, then BE WARNED: THE ONLY WAY TO REVERSE THIS CONFIGURATION IS TO RE-INSTALL NT! b.) Do you need access to Desktop Explorer once Adroit is running?. If so, use Method 1 (explained later). c.) Do you need to run any other programs besides the Adroit User Interface (ADROIT.EXE)?. If so, create a batch file (e.g. C:\STARTADR.BAT) to execute the required programs e.g. DDESRVR.EXE and/or EXCEL.EXE. d.) Are you using an Agent Server (AS.EXE) on your machine? If so, is it going to run as a service (configured in Adroit Setup)?. If it is not running as a service, create a batch file to execute AS.EXE, ADROIT.EXE and any other required programs. e.) If you are going to be using a batch file, then before continuing, please test them by closing all applications and running the batch file! Having decided on all of the above and if you are happy that the Adroit environment is properly configured and running correctly. The procediure: 1. Run the application REGEDT32.EXE (you could add a program item to your Administrative Tools program group to make running it easier) found in the SYSTEM32 directory. 2. Select the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE on Local Machine" document window. 3. Open the path through to \\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon There are 2 techniques for replacing the standard desktop with Adroit: Technique 1 The first technique allows for the functionality provided by previous versions of Windows NT and Adroit whereby access to the Desktop Explorer (Program Manager in NT 3.51) will be possible through an "Execute Command" behavior from a mimic in Adroit by launching EXPLORER.EXE. 4. Select the value that reads "Userinit: REG_SZ : userinit, nddeagent.exe " 5. Double click on the entry to edit it 6. Change the 'userinit' part to contain either a full pathname to your batch file or ADROIT.EXE as decided above. 7. Depending on your requirement, the end result should read something similar to: Userinit: REG_SZ : c:\startadr.bat,nddeagent.exe OR Userinit: REG_SZ : c:\adroit\adroit.exe,nddeagent.exe 8. Then close all applications, log off or reboot. Technique 2 The second technique will have the same "Execute Command" behavior launching only the standard Windows Explorer as opposed to the Desktop. This may be good enough for advanced users who feel comfortable with accessing all aspects of their PC via Windows Explorer. Microsoft uses the EXPLORER.EXE application to launch both the Desktop and Windows Explorer. It does so by detecting if it is the first instance to be run - if so, it launches as the Desktop Explorer - but it only does so if the SHELL value in the registry is EXPLORER.EXE. This changes the SHELL value. 4. Select the value that reads "Shell: REG_SZ : explorer.exe" 5. Double click on the entry to edit it 6. Change the value 'explorer.exe' to either a full pathname to your batch file or ADROIT.EXE as decided above. 7. Depending on your requirement, the end result should read something similar to: Shell: REG_SZ : c:\startadr.bat OR Shell: REG_SZ : c:\adroit\adroit.exe 8. Then close all applications, log off or reboot. If you need to access other NT programs once Adroit is running, you can do this using the "Execute Command" behavior explained above to launch any valid program on your PC. If you have problems and the Adroit User Interface does not launch you will need to reverse the PC registry changes made above from a remote NT PC on the network. This is done by logging on at the remote computer as an Administrator, starting REGEDT32.EXE and using the "Registry/Select Computer" menu item. If this fails you will need to re-install NT on the affected PC. 54. How do you export a mimic to a .CSV file? Answer: In the User Interface, when the mimic is in edit mode, open the File menu and select the Save As command to save it with a CSV extension. 55. Why, when using the Operation Action's data set parameter, am I unable to locally or globally acknowledge alarms, by using the localAckOne or globalAckOne slots of the alarm agent? Answer: Ensure that the, agentname.alarmtype, string is enclosed in double quotes i.e. "agentname.alarmtype" for this method to be effective. 56. How do you zoom out without a menu and toolbar? (ctrl & right mouse button zooms in but how do you zoom out of that?) Answer: Use the plus (+) key to zoom in, the minus (-) key to zoom out and the equal (=) key returns the picture to the zoom level it was last saved at. For more information, search for this Adroit Help topic: The View Menu - Viewing a Picture 57. My tags are graying out, and then ungraying. The driver does not report any errors, nor does Adroit give me any error messages, why? Answer: Some input tags have been output-enabled. Note: It is not recommended to output-enable a tag scanned to an input, because the driver will deny the write request, causing the tags to be Grayed out, then they will almost immediately ungray when the driver does it's next poll, hence this strange behaviour. Solution: Find all the tags that are scanned to the PLC input I/O and ensure that they are not output-enabled. Also ensure that no controls or changes are made to tags that are only scanned in, because these tags will reflect the controlled values and not the PLC values if the PLC values do not change. For more information, search for this Adroit Help topic: Control Bits (user modifiable) 58. Why is an empty import.wgp file created when exporting an agent and re-importing the .CSV file? Answer: If the created WGP file is empty, an error occurred during importing, please contact support. Importing is a 2-step process, in that the CSV file gets converted into a mimic WGP file, the WGP file then gets loaded virtually on top of the already loaded database. 59. When logging onto Adroit, the message ‘User name or password not found’ - why? Answer: Ensure that you have changed the User Manager rights to ‘Act as part of operating system’, press F1 and then select either ‘To configure the "Logon to Adroit " in’ Windows NT or 2000 depending on the operating system that is being used. Also ensure that the password was entered correctly. For more information, search for this Adroit Help topic: Logging On and Off 60. How do you import agents? Answer: In the User Interface, open the Agent Configurator, then select 'Import' from the File menu, then choose the .CSV file to convert. The data will be converted to the .WGP configuration file given in the Save As dialog. This file will be called Import.WGP by default, but the user may choose any filename, the file can then be loaded on-line into the current agent server using the 'Load Agents…' menu item from the File menu. For more information, search for this Adroit Help topic: To Import an Agent Type 61. How do you save zoomed windows? Answer: It is only possible to save a zoomed mimic when it is in Edit mode. 62. How do you prevent the right click button on a mimic from listing its associated tags? Answer: Use menu security in the Adroit user interface to secure the “Options\List tags” menu item for the “Operate Picture” menu Type. In this way, any user that does not belong to the specified Windows group will be unable to display the dialog that lists the tags associated with a mimic. 63. The error message ‘event full’ appears - why? Answer: Your operating system's Application log file is full - In Administrative Tools, open the Event Viewer and save the existing Application Log file, if required, then Clear all its events. Then increrase the log file size if required and set the applicable action required once the maximum log file size is reached, although Overwrite Events as Needed, is recommended. 64. How do you scroll through historical data in a trend? Answer: Use the trend toolbar, if this is a trend is displayed then elect it from the View menu, 'Toolbars…' menu item. Alternatively if you zoom into an historical trend, scroll bars will appear, allowing you to manually scroll to the required position..For more information, search for this Adroit Help topic: Trend Toolbar 65. We are using dual monitor screens, however when we drag a mimic to the next monitor, it stops displaying the color of the page, how can this be fixed? Answer: This can be fixed by doing the following: 1.) In the Adroit UI, open the Options menu and select the Preferences... menu item. 2.) When the Adroit properties dialog is displayed, select the Advanced tab. 3.) Under the Multi-monitor support group, set the 'Number of horizontal monitors' edit box to 2. 4.) Also open the configuration settings of your graphics card and ensure that the Display mode is set to 'DualView'. 66. How do you retrieve the toolbars if they disappear? Answer: Use the Toolbars menu item in the View menu, to choose which Toolbars to display. For more information, search for this Adroit Help topic: The View Menu 67. Why is my current version of Adroit a BETA version? Answer: For some reason, the Help\About dialog of certain Adroit Classic UIs indicate that the current version is a Beta. This can be fixed by deleting the Adroit.ini file that is located in your Windows system directory, typically C:\WINDOWS\ADROIT.INI. 68. The User Interface is not connecting to the local Agent Server Answer: The UI may be configured to connect to a remote agent server, examine the properties of the shortcut that started the UI, to see if another Agent Server is specified in the ‘Target’ field. If this is not the case then run the Adroit setup, and select the "UI connection" tab and ensure that the ‘Connect the UI only to the local Agent Server’ option is selected. If the problem persists, try open the Configurator, then from the ‘Options’ menu select the ‘Connect’ item, after a while all servers on the network will appear in a list, select the required server and click "Connect" if that fails, the Server may have crashed and requires re-starting. 69. Will the graphics on Windows NT and Windows 95 be the same? Answer: Yes and no, ensure that the screen resolution is set to the same size. Appearance differences may occur in the mimics because of graphics features like rounded corners on rectangles, and exact line thickness may differ between the operating systems. 70. How do you save Adroit workspaces? Answer: The workspace is saved per person per Windows logon. An administrator can use the regsitry editor to assign the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adroit Technologies\Adroit\Worksheet" key to be read-only after saving the workspace, to prevent it from being modified further. 71. Can different event logging be done to different files on Adroit Version 3.51? Answer: No, this option is only available on Version 4.1. 72. How to use the import file menu item? Answer: In the User Interface, open the Agent Configurator, then select 'Import' from the File menu, then choose the .CSV file to convert. The data will be converted to the .WGP configuration file given in the Save As dialog. This file will be called Import.WGP by default, but the user may choose any filename, the file can then be loaded on-line into the current agent server using the 'Load Agents…' menu item from the File menu. For more information, search for this Adroit Help topic: To Import an Agent Type 73. Why does Adroit Event view window not appear to print, even though mimics print OK? Answer: When printer drivers have been changed you need to explicitly go to print setup for the event view window and choose the correct printer. This is because each Adroit document window type maintains its own printer separately, so that different printers can be used to print different window types. 74. Why can I not see remote agent servers in the Configurator / Options / Connect dialog box or in the Browser application Agent Server combo box? Answer: This feature relies on being able to receive network broadcasts from the remote agent servers. Make sure that the remote agent servers have the "Enable remote servers to automatically detect this server" option enabled in Adroit Setup on the Project Name Options dialog If this is enabled, you will not see agent servers that exist on another domain/workgroup or across a network switch as broadcasts cannot travel across domains or switches. 75. The columns ‘category’ and ‘description’ are empty in the event window. Only the headings are displayed - why? Answer: Check that the language under control panel/regional settings is set to English (United States). Furthermore, the eventlog paths to EVTLOG.LOG and CATLOG.LOG messaging files must be correct in the Adroit Setup. For more information, search for this Adroit Help topic: Event Log Configuration 76. I have set up a PC so that a remote also receives the alarms, but when I open the event log, it only shows some alarms, why? Answer: Check that the routing is correct when setting up the alarm agent. For more information, search for this Adroit Help topic: To configure a route 77. How do you discriminate between pens in trends when using a black and white printer? Answer: By default, a new mimic or picture will have its zoom checkbox unchecked., in its 'Picture Properties' dialog. To Fix this: 1. Open the picture or mimic window. 2. Open the View menu and select the 'Properties…' command. 3. Tick the 'Zoom' checkbox in the 'General' tab of the 'Picture Properties' dialog. 4. Click OK and the zoom-related toolbar buttons and View menu commands will now be enabled. 83. How do you stop a window from restoring to its original size? Answer: Size the window to the required size and then save it, in the case of a picture window, this needs to be in edit mode for it to be saved. For more information, search for this Adroit Help topic: Toggle View 84. Why does the export/import feature not work for datalog agents with more than one log set? Answer: This is because the CSV export and import relies on the fact that the number of columns for a given agent type is constant and with multiple log sets there effectively become variable numbers of columns for the same agent type. The only solution is to directly create a WGP file offline containing the required datalog agents and load this into the agent server much like you would have loaded Import.WGP had you been able to create one. Since WGP files are simply flat ASCII files that can be created/modified in any text editor, do the following: Create one datalog agent manually of the size and shape you want; save the WGP file; cut and paste the bit pertaining to the datalog agent and replicate this structure n times, each time changing only the agent name. 85. Sometimes, the configurator does not connect Answer: The configurator will not connect if it is opened before the agent server has completed loading and is ready. For more information, search for this Adroit Help topic: Opening and Closing the Agent Configurator 86. The Multicolor behavior is not working correctly - why? Answer: This is usually caused by using the ‘value’ slot of an Analog agent instead of its status bit slots i.e. High-high, High, Low, Low-low and then setting the required bits that are set when these alarm limits are met (Press F1 to view the help topic detailing which bits are set by which alarm limit). It is also important to note that Adroit works down the associated entries list until the first match is found, and then ignores the remaining entries, so in order to ensure that the ‘Low-low’ alarm limit is reached, insert this ABOVE the ‘Low’ condition in the ‘Associated entries’ list. For more information, search for this Adroit Help topic: Configuring Multi-color Behavior with the Analog Agent 87. How do you remove the F1 Help file function from Adroit? Answer: This cannot be done because it is a pre-designed feature of being in the Windows environment. 88. Why are the alarms incorrectly sorted when sorting the Alarm window by using the 'Alarm time' column? Answer: One possible reason for the entries of the 'Alarm time' column not appearing in true ascending or descending order is because the Regional Settings of the computer have been altered. 89. How do you import/export scan points? Answer: By using the File/Export menu option and selecting Yes for the Device agent, a file named -SCAN.CSV will be created which can then be edited in Excel (See example below). This file can be subsequently re-imported by using the Import button within the Device agent edit dialog. Ensure that the Device agent is stopped before these scan points are reimported. For more information, search for this Adroit Help topic: Scanning Import 90. What printer configuration is required to ensure that color trends are printed correctly? Answer: It is important to configure clearly contrasting pens and to avoid pure-black. 91. Why are the Mimic text fields printed upside-down? Answer: Since Adroit version 3.5 certain printers have printed the text of Mimics upside down, while printing the other graphical items correctly. If you are experiencing this problem then do the following: 1) Open your User Interface (select the Start menu, Programs, Adroit 6 and the 'Classic User Interface' item). 2) Open the Options menu and click on the Preferences... menu item. 3) Select the Advanced tab, in the 'Adroit Properties' dialog. 4) Enable the 'Flip printed text vertically' checkbox under the 'Mimic settings' group. 92. What does this alarm description mean: ‘Cutting time losses and re-initializing’? Answer: This description, displayed in the Alarm viewer window, means that you are running timesync or some other time synchronizing software and that the Agent Server has detected a skip forward in time. This is not a problem; in fact it means that your time synchronizing software is working! 93. Why does the blinking behavior still work even after the digital description was taken out of the multistate. The Blinking was linked to the V01 slot - why? Answer: While the V01 tag reference has been removed in the multistate, the multistate V01 slot still contains a value of 1. Force it to 0 by displaying values in the multistate dialog and setting it to 0 manually. For more information, search for this Adroit Help topic: MultiState Configuration 94. How do I stop and start logging for a group of tags on an event? Answer: Create datalog agents in the usual way. Create an agent group (LOGTAGS in our example) and add the datalog agents for the tags to this group (for AN01 this will be LOG$AN01$value). Edit the agent group and set bulk edit option. Now create an expression and browse into v01 tagname.value used to start and stop logging (usually a Boolean, LOGTRIGGER.value). Still in edit mode of the expression, browse into the value the start slot of the agent group created above. (LOGTAGS.start). Make the expression triggered on systeminfo.second. 95. How do you embed a trend window within a mimic window? Answer: You cannot truly 'embed' any window in another window. But the following alternatives are available, so that a window will appear to be embedded within another: either position the trend window in its required position on top of the mimic and then enable its 'Set window to be always on top' window property, so that it will always remains visible or resize the mimic to fit the trend next to it or create a menu bar that will shift focus to a trend window. For more information, search for this Adroit Help topic: Trend Properties - Windows 96. How do you set up Security using Windows 95? Answer: Create an Administrator and Operator password. For more information, search for this Adroit Help topic: Administrator and Operator Override (Win95) Note: Adroit 5 has been designed to be used with NT-based Operating Systems 97. The eventlog is not updating - why? Answer: Check that the eventlog is configured to overwrite. If not, alter the settings, by using the following procedure: 1.) From the Start/Programs menu, select the Administrative Tools icon. 2.) Double click on the Event Viewer icon. 3a.) For the WinNT Operating System Select the Log Settings command from the Log menu 3b.) For the Win2000 Operating System Select a log, right click it and select Properties. 4.) For each of the three Logs (Application, System and Security), set the following settings: a.) The Maximum Log Size to suit your requirements. A typical Adroit event record uses 500 bytes of memory, therefore if the maximum log size is set at 512 Kilobytes, then it is possible to accumulate 1024 event records. b.) The Event Log Wrappings option to Overwrite Events as Needed. 5.) To look at an event in greater detail, double click on the appropriate entry. For more information, search for this Adroit Help topic: Event window This Adroit Event Viewer allows the saving of windows with different filter view settings to .EFF files, together with the archiving of the basic NT event log to .EVT files, and export of the filtered view to a .TXT file. 98. How do you bring up a mimic when a specific alarm occurs without a specific mimic being open? Answer: A mimic is the only way to do this, create a mimic and use it as a border and place all the behaviors on the border. Remember that this mimic must never be minimized, for then it will not be triggered. 99. Why do I get an "Out of memory" dialog when I open a trend, even though I have more than enough memory and hard drive space? Answer: Cause: This is caused by datalog files (*.LGI and/or *.LGD files) being read only. The read only attribute has either been set manually or this has been set after these files have been restored from a CD backup. Fix: Stop the agent server, select all LGD and LGI files, in Windows Explorer, left click, select “Properties" and clear the read-only check box, then restart the agent server. 100. Why does the Adroit UI crash when I try to import my bitmap image? Answer: Prior to Adroit 6.0.2, Adroit could only load 24 and 32 bit Windows BMP format files, with a .BMP extension; any other BMP file would cause the Adroit UI to crash. From Adroit 6.0.2 onwards, Adroit supports 4, 8 ,16, 24 and 32 bit color Windows BMP format files. However OS/2 BMP format files CANNOT be loaded. 101. How do you change the number format? Answer: To change the number format that is displayed within a Text field, the text string can be formatted. For more information, search for this Adroit Help topic: Formatting a Text Field 102. How do you start up the Adroit User Interface in place of Program Manager or Explorer? 3. If this fails you will need to re-install NT on the affected PC. 103. How can I get picture elements on the mimics to flash? Answer: Attach the Blinking behavior to the picture elements that are required to flash. For more information, search for this Adroit Help topic: Blinking Behavior 104. How do you export the scan agent? Answer: By using the File/Export menu option and selecting Yes for the Device agent, a file named -SCAN.CSV will be created which can then be edited in Excel, and subsequently re-imported using this Scanning Import facility. The Device agent itself cannot be imported but should be created beforehand. For more information, search for this Adroit Help topic: Scanning Import 105. Why, when I display a value in a formatted text field in a mimic, it its displayed value 0.00 even though its actual value is not zero? Answer: Ensure that the format used, matches the data type of the displayed data, for if an integer value is displayed using a real value format, then its value will be displayed as 0.00. If this is the case, change the 'conversion terminator' to the required integer format. For more information, search for this Adroit Help topic: Conversion Terminator 106. How do you prevent the menu bar from being displayed at Startup? Answer: Use the Menu item in the View menu or press Ctrl-M, which toggles the menu bar visibility, to hide the menu bar then close the User Interface. When the User Interface is restarted, the menu bar will be hidden until you display it again either using the Menu item in the View menu or by pressing Ctrl-M (assuming that the current user if allowed tp do this by the UI security configuration otherwise you will need to call the Adroit configuration administrator). For more information, search for this Adroit Help topic: The View Menu 107. Why did my trend fail to display the value of a tag after this same pen had successfully trended another tag? Answer: If after changing tags on a particular trend pen, the trend does not trend the value of the new tag (instead showing a dotted line), then you need to enable the "multi-colur" check box, for this pen, press the "multi-colour" button to open the "multi-color fill" dialog and remove all the tag entries which are probably pointing to the previous tag defaults. |
